Biography

I'm not interested in using technology to make things easier or faster; that needs to be addressed entirely. Instead, I embrace technology to stretch and redefine what art can be.

EKO33 is the professional alias of Jean-Jacques Duclaux, a generative art pioneer who has been programming art since the 1990s. A French artist with a background in computer science, he began creating algorithmic images long before “AI art” entered the mainstream, famously starting out with a Commodore computer and floppy disks in 1999. Over the years, EKO33 has continually evolved his practice, integrating custom code, self-trained AI models, and neural networks to produce abstract works that merge geometric precision with organic chaos. His art – often vibrant compositions of swirling forms and saturated colors – invites viewers to reconsider the interface between human creativity and machine processes. Each piece is described by EKO33 as a “digital tapestry… at the intersection of precision and chaos,” reflecting the blend of mathematical rigor and emotional depth in his work.
Internationally recognized, EKO33 has exhibited at major venues and events such as Art Basel (Miami and Hong Kong), the Venice Biennale’s digital art showcase, and leading galleries in Europe. In 2024, Fellowship’s London gallery presented his solo exhibition Latent Ink, a collection of 500 unique artworks that represent his most technically advanced project to date. Latent Ink combined AI-trained data sets, generative algorithms in p5.js, and even physical plotter drawings, showcasing EKO33’s commitment to bridging digital and tangible art forms. As an innovator who has embraced blockchain-based art and multichain platforms (from Ethereum to Tezos), EKO33 stands at the forefront of the generative art movement.
