Jess Mac - Cult of Jess

Overview

"Cult of Jess is my way of making the invisible visible. Through masks, color, and chaos, I translate trauma into images that carry both horror and resilience, fragments of self that were once forced to hide."

- Jess Mac

The collection 'Cult of Jess' is a series of portraits reflecting on a colorful yet nightmarish alternative universe. Part animal and part clown, the melting faces and limbs reveal altered states of consciousness, merging joy and horror. Many of the figures are set in childlike scenes, starry nights, snowy mountain tops, or rainbows. These images present a disturbing narrative of terrifying connections and chaotic beauty, reflecting the artist's childhood trauma. The works, featuring figurines, puppets, and masks, explore the many layers of identity formed around an abusive leader.
As a small child, dissociation was the artist's only means of survival, which left their reality fractured and hidden in adulthood. Various inner 'parts' emerged to handle ongoing sexual abuse, leading to struggles with depression, anxiety, disembodiment, and self-harm. The artist illustrates these shards of self in an otherworldly, dark, emotional landscape through colorful portraits, fragmented bodies, and animal hybrids.
Masks in these pieces underscore a search for identity and authenticity when one has been forced to play various roles to survive; the desire to be seen and accepted, to be recognized as human when one's humanity has been stripped away, and shame has dominated for too long. These works also depict the strength and resilience of survival and how art can aid in healing by making the invisible visible.
Queer and absurd, this collection invites you to join the artist's rich imaginary worlds (and their 'cult').
