Sasha Stiles is a first-generation Kalmyk-American poet, artist, and AI researcher widely recognized as a pioneer of algorithmic poetry and hybrid art. Her practice bridges tradition and innovation, mixing classical literary craft with cutting-edge technology to create “hybrid poetics” that merge word, image, and algorithm. A graduate of Harvard and Oxford, Stiles co-founded theVERSEverse – an experimental literary collective dedicated to poetry in the digital age – and has served as a poetry mentor to the AI humanoid BINA48 since 2018. In her transmedia work, Stiles reframes poetry as both an art and a technology: a means of encoding human experience across time, which can be expanded through collaboration with AI.
Since the late 2010s, Stiles has been at the forefront of human-machine co-creation in literature. Her 2021 book Technelegy, a poetry collection co-authored with her custom AI language model, was among the first of its kind and earned praise from futurist Ray Kurzweil. She has also produced award-winning projects like Cursive Binary, which integrate binary code and calligraphy, and Array (a poem partially written by AI) that interrogate the nature of authorship. Stiles’s work has garnered numerous accolades – including honors from the Lumen Prize and Ars Electronica – and has been exhibited and performed internationally at such venues as the Victoria and Albert Museum, Art Basel Miami, and MoMA PS1. Her collaborations with brands like Gucci and Bang & Olufsen further highlight her role in bringing poetry into contemporary culture. Sasha Stiles elevates language to new heights by entwining it with AI, all while posing profound questions about the future of art and what it means to be human in a digital world.
