AM - The Film

AM was born, in my mind, as a collection of fleeting moments. Not exactly stories, but fragments. Night, I thought, lives out of the continuum of time as we normally perceive it - orderly, productive, marked by causation. Night is a different “place”: supposedly it’s where we put down our logical-thinking mask and reconnect to a more instinctive side of our nature. At night we have the chance to recognize the world is scary and deep and mysterious and stop pretending we have it all figured out. This millenary realization is put at risk by the increasing colonization of night by light, commerce, reason. In the collection I created 300 “minutes” happening from midnight to 5 AM. Scenes that were somehow interlinked but not really connected by a specific narrative, as these deeper epiphanies should be experienced alone. Today, I have been going through the collection and was tempted to bring it to life, animate some of its moments. For one thing, my approach to AM has been cinematic from the very start. The scenes had to be meaningful, emotional, and bearing the promise of something that was about to happen. Once again, these are fragments, not stories. They are not explained - they never will be, I don’t care about it - but now they are happening, in some way. Adding motion and music made this collection feel even closer to my idea of the night. Intense, personal and moving. I see this video as a chance to immerse oneself in these corners of the night, not as spectators but as actors, to really feel the urgency and the wonder of a world that goes beyond our understanding.
