MTA Regional Bus Operations (Roope Rainisto)
Video, 2023
About the artwork
Visualization of a day in the life of a bus driver, providing the MTA Regional Bus Operations to area customers. When working on this, I was thinking whether this video would be better if I had done this with a regular video camera: shot video of buses and drivers and travelers and then edited the result together. Would the result have been as good? I think this is better and more effective in terms of it being able to evoke the feelings I intended it to create. Realism in visual communication isn't often the best way to express feelings. We recognize ourselves and the chaotic world we live in too well, and the space for imagination can sometimes be shorter.

Listen to Roope Rainisto discuss this work.
Roope Rainisto, from Finland, has committed the past 25 years to the disciplined study and practice of visual storytelling, particularly in art, design, and photography. His work is a prolonged inquiry into the nature of how we tell stories visually, balancing between the tangible and the ethereal.
In recent years, Rainisto has turned his attention to the implications of artificial intelligence in art, exploring how these tools can extend or disrupt our traditional understanding of photographic expression. This is an extension of his lifelong exploration of the intersection of technology and artistry.
Educated with a Master of Science in Information Networks, Rainisto's understanding of the technical underpinnings of digital technologies influences his artistic practice, offering him a unique vantage point from which to experiment and innovate.
Throughout his career, Rainisto's works have consistently sought to challenge and expand the viewer's perception of reality. His artistic journey is less about the pursuit of newness for its own sake and more about a continuous reevaluation of what constitutes the visual narrative. In each piece, whether rooted in traditional mediums or digital exploration, Rainisto urges a dialogue about the nature of reality, illusion, and the art that lies in between.
