About the Weather
This project is mainly (but not only) about the perception of reality as subjective space and time and the simultaneity of perceptions and existences. In this sense, I've tried to represent different perceptions of the same moment and different perspectives as it unfolds in each piece. The work represents sensations and feelings such as absence, spleen, longing, hope, the struggle against fears, and freedom.
Emilia TrevisaniIn "About the Weather," Emilia Trevisani delves into the subjective nature of reality, exploring the simultaneity of perceptions across space and time. This exhibition represents her intimate exploration of "the moment" as a multifaceted experience encompassing sensations and feelings such as absence, longing, hope, and the pursuit of freedom. Her artworks strive to capture different perceptions of the same instance, revealing the complexity of experiences as they unfold and the interdependence of existences.
In the personal context of this work, the challenge of communicating one's own feelings and perceptions is intertwined with both the importance of understanding those of others and the search of balance in an emotional atmosphere permeated by the complex and dramatic historical period that the world is going through.
Over the years, Trevisani has amassed a collection of photographs capturing the skies and seas—images that evoke a sense of infinity and perpetual change. These photographs are not merely visual records; they are reflections of her inner world, helping her to translate fleeting moods into tangible expressions, like providing a clue, a roadmap for understanding her inner visions. In this series, these images serve as textures for 3D solids around which flocks of birds navigate, creating a dynamic interplay between the static and the kinetic. This melding guides the viewer through multiple perspectives of the same moment, thus creating a three-dimensional exploration of a state of being.
The technical backbone of this project involves the use of artificial intelligence through Stable Diffusion and a GLSL boids simulator for TouchDesigner. This combination allows Trevisani to reinterpret these photographic textures, generating new skies and scenarios, thus pushing the boundaries of digital art. The transformation of lighting within these 3D environments further enhances the atmospheric shifts, accentuating the ephemeral nature of her subjects.
The flight patterns of birds, simulated through software that echoes the principles of Boids —an AI system developed in the year of her birth—are integral to the narrative of this exhibition. These patterns represent the collective behavior and inherent unpredictability of nature, themes that resonate deeply within her work.
"About the Weather" is not just an artistic endeavor but a technical journey that challenges the limits of her tools and reflects the evolution of digital artistry. Each piece is a testament to the power of technology as a medium for expressing the complex tapestry of human emotion and the transcendent beauty of the natural world.
