About the artwork

ENCOUNTERS Encounters is an ongoing series of AI-generated video works, each built around a single moment of contact with an impossible reality. Every piece is a fragment, a scene that feels grounded and real, yet holds an instability that never fully resolves. There is no narrative, no before or after. The work exists entirely within the pressure of the moment itself. Each Encounter lives in the threshold between the real and the imagined. It is believable enough to enter, and impossible enough to unsettle, and it holds both at once without tipping into either. Tip toward the real and it becomes an ordinary photograph. Tip toward the imagined and it becomes fantasy. The work exists only in the tension between, the charged space where a world we do not have briefly wears the body of the one we do. Some Encounters arrive through rupture: a surface tears, a figure lifts, reality breaks its own visible law. Others arrive through stillness: nothing happens, yet the world is already altered, held in a charged and impossible condition. One reveals the impossible through event. The other through presence. Both are the same act of contact. What distinguishes this work is not the images. It is the discipline that produces them. When anything can be generated, generation is no longer the art. Most AI work collapses the distance between impulse and output: a prompt is typed, an image appears, the result is kept. Encounters refuses that collapse. The work is made through recognition rather than invention, and recognition is slow, disciplined, and exacting. Each piece passes through a deliberate, multi-stage process: listening to an image until its hidden law surfaces, testing what it conceals, translating that law into motion, and judging, without compromise, whether the result carries the pressure of a real world. AI generates from abundance; most fragments are discarded. Only the few that survive earn their place in the series. This process is not a tool applied to the work from outside. It emerged from the work itself and is now inseparable from it, the difference between generating an image and authoring a world. The system is not attached to the art. It is how the art discovers itself. Each Encounter stands alone. Together, they accumulate into a wider field, not through sequence or story, but through presence. A world discovered through recurrence, recognized through pressure, that was never fully designed yet somehow persists. ARTIST STATEMENT For most of my life I was looking for something I couldn't name, a way of seeing I kept circling without reaching. I recognize it now in this work. The search that drives each Encounter, moving through thousands of images for the rare one that feels real, turns out to be the same search I have been making all along. Since childhood I have had the sense that reality is thinner than it appears, that there are worlds pressing just beneath the surface of the visible. I had no way to give that feeling form. This work has finally become its form. I am drawn to AI for a reason that may sound strange: it lets me interfere less. I have always wanted the kind of art that asks the least of the artist's hand and the most of the artist's attention. What moves me is the surprise, the moment something appears that I did not invent and could not have predicted, yet recognize at once as true. I do not want to impose a world. I want to witness one. I am honest about what the machine is doing, because the honesty is part of the work. What surfaces in these images is not a mind dreaming. It is the residue of human seeing, everything people have ever photographed, painted, and remembered, compressed into a single field and returned in a new arrangement. The image arrives wearing the body of the real, though nothing real stood in front of any lens. That is what makes it an image of the threshold. It holds the believable and the impossible at once, and refuses to collapse into either. So the discipline I have built is not a way of controlling the work. It is a way of getting myself out of its way, of listening closely enough, and judging honestly enough, to know the real when it appears. There are two halves to it, and they ask opposite things of me. Before the image exists, I tune the conditions; that part is authored, and it is mine. After it exists, I receive it; that part is recognition, and it cannot be forced. I author the field. I witness the catch. The discovery happens on both sides, and that doubled surprise is the reason the work stays alive for me. Most attempts fail. The few that survive feel less like things I made than like evidence of something I found. That is what I am after: not fantasy, but contact. Not invention, but recognition. The moment the hidden law becomes visible, and for a few seconds, we are allowed to see it. MISSION STATEMENT Encounters exists to use artificial intelligence as a medium of recognition rather than invention: a disciplined search for the rare moment when a hidden law becomes visible, and a world at the edge of perception makes brief contact with our own. The aim is not to imagine other realities, but to find evidence that they are already there, pressing beneath the surface of the real, waiting to be recognized rather than designed.

About the artist

g0naji

Ghassan Naji, also known as g0naji (born 1983), is an artist and former art director who defies norms through experimental AI work. Naji's work at its purest is about response, visual exploration, and discovery. His passion lies in leveraging AI to discover new possibilities in image-making. Naji's art is post-photographic, meaning it goes beyond traditional photography. He aims to show a new kind of reality, blurring the lines between the real and the imaginary. In his work, he's big on color, composition, and storytelling, blending them seamlessly. He's also inspired by Abstract Expressionism. He enjoys playing with shapes and colors to create new art forms and push the boundaries for new abstract artistic expressions. Before diving into art full-time, Naji spent ten years as a professional designer and art director. He's been recognized with awards like the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity, The London International Awards, The Loeries Awards, and the Clio Awards. Today, he keeps exploring new territories in AI art, driven by his curiosity and passion for pushing creative boundaries.
